What To Wear To Thanksgiving: mark. Chic It Out Pants

I’m sure you’re already planned your Friendsgiving, decided on your makeup look, making your grocery list to make some artichoke dip and homemade cranberry sauce, now what to wear!?! A day who’s sole purpose is to eat (with thanks of course!), there needs to be some functionality to your outfit for expanding tummies and lounging!  The formula of chic leggings + flowing top sounds about right for a Thanksgiving Day look.

mark. Chic It Out Pants ($34)

mark. Chic It Out Pants ($34)

The mark. Chic It Out Pants ($34) are the stretchy pants of choice for the day!  They are thick enough that you don’t feel weird wearing them as pants.  The waist band is a little wider so it doesn’t dig into you but stretches nicely for expanding tummies.  And they are chic!  They have a killer tone on tone snakeskin design that give them just a little bit of interest!  So you look like you’ve stepped up your game from those cheap $5 leggings.

Now that we’ve determined your chic easy bottoms go with a nice comfortable loose fitting top!  I’ve got 2 ways to wear it:  dress it up with a chic blouse or keep it casual in a comfy sweatshirt.  If you’re thanksgiving is more of a dinner party type of event go with a blouse, if it’s casual at home go with the sweatshirt!

This black and white portofino blouse from Express is my favorite!  The style is simple and chic and would be appropriate for pretty much any occasion.

To go casual go with the mark. Effortless Edge Sweatshirt ($28, last seen here) pair it with an infinity scarf in a fall print like the mark. All Around Style Scarf ($18) for some extra cozy.  The Effortless Edge Sweatshirt has a more styled cut and detail with the side zipper so again you’re stepping up your game from that college sweatshirt.  Currently the beige is limited in sizes but just for the holidays it’s now available in BLACK!  Even better in my opinion!  You can shop the mark. Mani Monday: Friendsgiving

Julep Maven It Girl November Box: Friendsgiving

Julep Maven It Girl November Box: Friendsgiving

I hosted my Friendsgiving on Saturday and I have to say it was a success! Not only did we have a lot of fun, but we had a lot of tasty options (like apps and fresh cranberry sauce). I also had a lot of style inspiration! (like here, here and on my pinterest board!) When I saw Julep’s Maven November box was a Friendsgiving theme I knew I was selecting that one and putting their expertly styled polishes on my digits for my own Friendsgiving!

Mani Monday: Julep Marzia and KiKi

Mani Monday: Julep Marzia and KiKi

I elected to go with the IT Girl box which contained Marzia, Kiki and Ilsa. I’ve been feeling more simplistic mani’s lately so I used the two metallic shades Marzia and KiKi on my fingers and the dark inky cream Ilsa on my toes.

Got to put that china to good use! Nail shots!

Got to put that china to good use! Nail shots!

The dark beige metallic Marzia was the perfect fall shade and the accent finger in the shimmering dusty teal Kiki added just enough interest. And I have to say after the abuse they took cleaning and cooking these polishes held up! Which is why if you haven’t tried Julep yet, you need to!

You can join Julep and get your own maven monthly box here!  Your first box is free!

Friendsgiving – Thanksgiving Appetizers

Let’s be honest, he best part of Thanksgiving, or in my case, Friendsgiving this year, is those hours before you eat when things are cooking and you’re snacking on delicious appetizers and socializing!  A personal favorite is dips!  Who doesn’t like a good dip!?!  The main staple from my family is a good warm, cheesy artichoke dip!  It’s perfect for the fall and Thanksgiving, plus it’s super easy!

eat, drink and give thanks

eat, drink and give thanks

Artichoke Dip

  • 1 pkg (8oz) Philadelphia cream cheese softened
  • 1 can (14 oz) Artichoke hears, drained and chopped
  • ½ cup mayo
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove garlic minced

Mix all, spoon in pie plate bake 350 for 25 min.

**If you’d like add in some jalapeno’s for some extra kick, or bacon for some savory salty goodness.  Serve it with some fresh french bread or baguette.

A good pairing with artichoke dip is some brie with fruit.  I personally like baked brie for fall paired with apples and grapes.  The clean crisp flavor from the fruit balances well with the savory artichoke dip.  I also love a good crispy cracker because sometimes that’s what I like my dip and brie on!

A few more staples from Hessinger family Thanksgivings are the good old spinach dip in a pumpernickel bread bowl, BLT dip served with broccoli, and the forever a favorite french onion dip.  Now besides the BLT, these are 70’s favorites and I’m sure your mom made them too.  They aren’t fancy but sometimes you don’t need to be.  But what we do like to do is try something new!  This year my new recipe is Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, Apple & Gruyere Bites.

Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, Apple & Gruyere Bites
Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1½ granny smith apples, cubed into ½” cubes
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 1½ oz. grated gruyere cheese
  • 2 tbsp. chives, minced
  • ½ tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 package (1 pound) of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheets with silicone baking mats. Set side.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and cook the onions (with 1 tsp. of salt) until they’re golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove and set aside in a large bowl. In the same skillet, sauté mushrooms until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside in the bowl with the onions.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add in the apples with the sugar. Cook until softened, about 10 minutes. Remove from pan and add to the large bowl with onions and mushrooms.
  4. Add the cheese, chives, and thyme to the bowl and stir to combine the mixture well. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. With a pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 2-inch squares and place them on the lined baking sheets. Using a pastry brush, brush beaten egg on the squares.
  6. Using a tablespoon, place filling in the middle of each puff pastry.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through and switching the baking sheet on the top rack to the bottom and the bottom to the top, until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Let the tarts cool a bit before serving, you don’t want people to burn the roofs of their mouths!
And just to recap here are a few more Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving ideas on what to wear, mani ideas, makeup ideas and an easy cranberry sauce recipe.

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Easy Homemade Fresh Cranberry Sauce

It’s not that I don’t like the canned stuff, it’s that homemade and fresh is so much better!  My mom made this years and years ago as an alternative and we’ve never looked back.  It’s more of a relish than a jelly sauce, but not only will it taste way better, it dresses up your holiday meal like no other!  Plus!  It’s excellent for leftover turkey sandwiches!

What You Need:

1 bag of fresh cranberries
½ cup sugar
1 whole navel orange, cut in quarters, remove any seed if any are there, should not be but sometimes a little one is there
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp dry raspberry Jell-o

How To Make It:

Grind all in processor, blender or chopper

Let sit about 2 hours or longer, to blend flavors.  The Jell-o has to dissolve.  Overnight is really best!

Notes:

You can double this recipe for a large crowd.

You can chop as fine as you want, but I do pretty fine.

You do not have to cook this recipe, usually don’t but I have cooked it before for a little different taste.

I'm Thankful For Tasty Cranberry Sauce!

I’m Thankful For Tasty Cranberry Sauce!

I will most certainly will be making this for Friendsgiving this Saturday.  Plus it’s one of those things that you can do the night before making one less task on the busy day.  Enjoy!  And if you need some more inspiration for the day check out my ideas on what to wear, mani idea, makeup idea and some of my favorite appetizers!

Holiday Styling Tips: Plaid

Holiday Styling Tips: Plaid

Holiday Styling Tips: Plaid

The holiday season is here!  To go along with all those festive outings coming up you’ll need a festive look!  Which is why Jill from My Sweet Obsessions and I have a few tips to make your holiday styling a little easier.  First on the list, plaid!  Plaid is a easy fall print that transitions really well for holiday.  It can be casual or dressy so super fitting for your holiday events.  And yes holiday events include Thanksgiving!  Plaid is a perfect fall pattern for your Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving looks!

Alicia’s Tips For Styling Plaid:

1.  Go with a bold plaid

Go Bold This Holiday With Plaid Pants

Go Bold This Holiday With Plaid Pants

I like red of course, it’s the most festive, but you can pick any color.  The key is to go with an all over print like in pants, or a jacket!  These ankle columnists in red plaid from Express (old) are a pretty bold way to wear plaid.

2.  Anchor it with a neutral

When going bold anchor it with a neutral, like black, to keep it wearable.  The solid black blazer over a graphic tee helps keep my bold plaid pants wearable.

3.  Dress up casual plaid with dressy fabrics.

Satin Blazer Dresses Up Plaid Pants And A Graphic Tee

Adding a satin blazer instantly dresses up the look.  The mark. Blaze A New Trail Blazer ($60) is the perfect piece to dress up plaid, with it’s nice quality and poppy print lining it’s a wardrobe must have.  It’s fitted, so not only is it slimming, but it also is a dressier silhouette.  (I even paired this blazer over my wedding dress for the after parties!)

4.  Complete with a little sparkle

Metallics and sparkle make anything a little more holiday-tastic!  I finished off my look with the mark. Pumped With Vogue Heels ($40), mark. Twice As Nice Necklace and mark. Cube Effect Necklace ($18).

Jill’s Styling Tips: Subtly add plaid by layering

My Sweet Obsessions: Holiday Plaid

My Sweet Obsessions: Holiday Plaid

“Go subtle with the plaid by layering a plaid button up under a sweatshirt like the Effortless Edge Sweatshirt by mark. Expose the plaid cuff and collar and unzip the side zipper for just a hint of plaid. To keep the plaid the main focus of your look, keep your accessories simple. Then, stay casual by finishing off with a pair of medium wash distressed denim jeans and brown riding boots.” – Jill from My Sweet Obsessions

As you’re planning your menu, guests and shopping list for Thanksgiving… or Friendsgivng… you should also be thinking about your look!  “OH how vain!”  But nobody wants too look like they’ve been slaving over a hot stove all day even though they have been.  Aaaaaand it’s a reason to put a little more sparkle in your step!  Let’s start with your makeup look!

Thanksgiving Day Makeup - Subtle Smokey Eye and Nude Lips

Thanksgiving Day Makeup – Subtle Smokey Eye and Nude Lips

NUDE LIP:  mark. All Butter Now in Bare All ($11)
Since you’ll be shoveling, errrr gracefully placing delicious food in your mouth all day going with a simple lip and a bolder eye is a good idea.  A nude lip doesn’t need to be reapplied all day long to keep the integrity of the look, just at the start and after you eat!   mark. All Butter Now is like a balm but with full color, it’s the perfect choice!

Subtle Smokey Eye with mark. Eye Dream Of Glam Eye Pallet

Subtle Smokey Eye with mark. Eye Dream Of Glam Eye Pallet

SUBTLE SMOKEY EYE:  mark. Eye Dream Of Glam Eyeshadow Pallet ($40) with Gimmie A Look Brush Kit ($28).

Since your lips are neutral go bold on the eye, but not like “I’m going out!” bold, just daytime bold!  The mark. Eye Dream Of Glam pallet is the perfect glimmering shades that aren’t too shocking.  Go with shade 2 (top row, 2nd pan) as your base color all over the lid.  Dab shade 12 (third row, 4th pan) with an eyeshadow brush to the center of your lid and out.  Use the same eyeshadow brush to use shade 15 (row 4, 3rd pan) to accent your outer corner in a v shape and into the crease.  Since these are marbleized shades they aren’t too heavy and blend perfectly!

Subtle Smokey Eye and Nude Lip Look for Fall

Subtle Smokey Eye and Nude Lip Look for Fall

Use a little bronzer to define your cheeks and as your blush and you’ve got a look that’s perfect for fall!  This look can easily work for the day, and keep you look great all day long with the killer formula in the Eye Dream of Glam pallet.  And it looks great with the perfect fall sweater, mark. You know who’s got some killer style, our mark. girl Lucy Hale!  Spotted on her instagram was the above pic from her prepping for the CMA’s.  It immediately caught my eye and I was like ooooh love her look, I totally should copy cat it!

Boucle and Pencil Skirt

Boucle and Pencil Skirt

Her statement boucle coat was really what got my attention and I immediately thought, “I have that mark. Instant Edge Blazer that’s similar!”  I love the longer length on hers but my blazer is more appropriate for work.

mark. Twice As Nice Necklace

I don’t have a leather pencil skirt with a killer side slit, but I do have this black pencil skirt with slit from Altuzarra for Target!  Close enough!  Then just add a red top and some black pointed toe heels and I’ve recreated Lucy’s look!  Her top has a really cute zipper detail but I just added the mark. Twice As Nice Necklace ($24) for a zig zag edgy detail.  Totally Lucy Hale’s style and  just happens to be a Lucy Hale favorite and top pick for holiday!
